Girls in STEMM: HPE Virtual Visit

WE Council 2023-09-17

On December 6th, HPE held its second company visit for students from three Beijing international schools participating in the Girls in STEMM program. Even though due to COVID restrictions, we had to shift to a virtual visit, HPE still created a fantastic and engaging visit with many interactive activities and games.

Michael Zhu, Global VP and Managing Director of China, HPE, welcomed girls and shared HPE’s culture, values, and goals. Michael strongly believes that technology is a force for good, and in HPE they work on various innovative projects, for example, using technology to predict the weather and find out where the next wildfire will be, which saves the lives of many residents and firefighters. One of the most impressive and latest HPE inventions is Frontier, the fastest, greenest supercomputer in the world that is built to solve the world’s biggest scientific challenges. Working in STEMM fields provides ample opportunity for those who seek to contribute to meaningful projects that can develop sustainability and make a difference in the world.

After Michael’s inspiring presentation, the girls got acquainted with other HPE representatives such as Echo Li, HR Director, and Jessica Wang, Product and Solution Manager. Each of them provided a deep dive into HPE’s purpose, beliefs, and innovative solutions, and how they bring positive changes to advance the way people live and work. Girls were highly engaged in the session and demonstrated an outstanding score in the fun quiz afterward.

To help students better understand themselves by exploring their natural tendency and traits, HPE invited students to take the MBTI test to find out their personality type. Girls found this activity very interesting and useful and stayed devoted to an interactive group discussion. They shared what they found true from the test, what surprised them, and their future aspirations. Some of them pointed out that the test only shows some elements of the personality, not the whole picture. Moreover, people’s interests tend to evolve with time.

HPE representatives including young engineers and women leaders shared their stories of finding their vocation and the meaning behind their work and indicated the benefits of understanding ourselves and playing with one’s strengths. However, they don’t define who we are today and what we can be tomorrow. We will grow over time, and it’s important to stay open and embrace the changes. The key to a successful career and happy life lies in being passionate about your work and believing that what you do matters.

Thanks again to all of the HPE representatives for sharing their personal stories and inspiring the girls from the Canadian International School of Beijing, Dulwich College, and Keystone Academy.
